Where are these programs held?
In private facilities such as in a learning/event room in Mantate or in a living room in the private house in Motomachi.
Programs may include a small study tour to salt domes and the adjacent hand made salt factory. Locations may vary to comply with weather and seasonal changes.
What is the accommodation for overnight programs?
Accommodation is NOT included in the overnight programs. However, it can be arranged upon your request. Programs are held in the modest facilities of the local community. This is a way for Ohshima to share as much of its local culture and customs as possible with program participants. The first option for sleeping rooms is traditional Japanese futons. This means bedding is laid out on tatami or hardwood floors.

The second option for lodging is in modest inns owned by local islanders. These rooms are traditional tatami rooms with Japanese futons. A tatami room has high quality woven, straw floors with a low table and cushions in the center. The table and cushions are used for tea. At night the table is moved to the corner of the room and traditional Japanese futon bedding is laid out on the tatami floors. It is the responsibility of all participants to prepare their bedding each evening. For those who wish to be shown how to do this process in the traditional Japanese style a program organizer will be happy to show you.
Are there any health concerns to be aware of on the island?
Malaria shots are not needed, although there are many mosquitoes during the summer months. Homes and inns have screens so you will be mosquito-free at night. It is recommended to bring insect repellent for outdoor hikes on the volcano or walking through the towns. There are poisonous snakes on the island. It is necessary to wear closed-toed shoes with socks when hiking or touring through the towns. There are no sea snakes. Walking barefoot or with open-toed shoes on the beaches is common. There are many large and small spiders on the island. The most common are gentle and harmless and are as scared of you as you might be of them. You will most likely have these spiders in your bedrooms. If you leave them alone, they will hide and stay away from you. Because, Ohshima is an island the insects that live here are much larger than those traditionally found in the Continental U.S. or Europe. Again, the insects are as scared of you as you might be of them. Leave them alone and they will stay out of your way.
